Muirfield RDA, a member of Riding for the Disabled Association, was established in 1990 at West Fenton Farm near Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland. Riding is offered to physically
disabled people and people with various learning difficulties. People of all ages are welcome and currently over 150 Riders
are enjoying weekly riding sessions thanks to the dedication of over 150 helpers, 10 instructors and 2 physiotherapists,
all on a voluntary basis. So why Riding?......
- From the beginning, riders learn balance, coordination and self-assurance while receiving therapeutic muscle stimulation.
- As a result of carefully planned lessons, poise posture, strength and flexibility improve.
- A strong sense of responsibility develops as the rider learns to take part in the care of the horses and equipment.
- Equestrian skills, teamwork and cooperation are learned as the rider becomes more independent on horseback.
- Classes, horse shows and events encourage confidence, self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment as new levels of expertise
and new goals are met.
Throughout its history the group has been fortunate enough to receive tremendous support from those who live and work in
East Lothian area. It was this kind of support, together with the group's own fundraising efforts and finally National Lottery
Funding (Sportscotland and the Community Fund) that the Group was able,to build a wonderful indoor riding arena. This very
special facility was opened officially on 22nd May 2003 by HRH The Princess Royal. Now the riding sessions can be held throughout
the year regardless of the weather; sessions can be held in the evenings and training days for helpers can be held on a regular
basis.
